‘Rum Diary’ Trailer

Johnny Depp plays a young version of Hunter S. Thompson in this trailer for ‘The Rum Diary’. Have a look and tell us what you think.

Why Disney put The Lone Ranger on hold

The Lone Ranger reboot was slated to star Armie Hammer from The Social Network in the title role and Johnny Depp as Tonto.

The long-awaited film was all set to face stiff competition next December, as it was going up against The Hobbit, Life of Pi, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, and World War Z.

That is, until Disney pulled the plug on the movie while it was still building sets.

The official reason for the unceremonious cancellation? Disney was concerned about the budget.

Still, whatever the real reason, the last minute shutdown left many scratching their heads.

Think about it: the movie had the star power of Depp returning to work for director Gore Verbinski, who let actor create a magic role with Jack Sparrow in Pirates, and there’s no reason to think he couldn’t create another great secondary role that steals the show with Tonto.

It also had Jerry Bruckheimer producing, whose blockbuster instincts are usually pretty sharp. Sure, he’s had some bad luck at the box office lately with Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, but Bruckheimer may hit pay-dirt on TV again with Take the Money and Run – and there’s absolutely no reason to think he won’t knock one out of the park with a movie or two down the road.

Just days after the news hit about The Lone Ranger getting shut down, a report surfaced on the Hollywood Reporter that Disney was giving Verbinski a week to make changes to the script to bring down the budget, with Verbinski and Bruckheimer apparently giving up $10 million total from their fees to bring costs down. (Depp also agreed to reduce his fee as well.)

Other factors contributing to the shutdown include: fears that the movie may not have generated the necessary $800 million (worldwide) to be profitable, as well as Cowboys and Aliens underperforming at the box office, which could kill off the western genre for a while at the movies.

Of course, there were also previous problems with Verbinski letting the third Pirates movie get up to $300 million, and Disney has also reportedly spent $300 million on John Carter.

Robert Iger, CEO of Disney, told the Reporter, “it’s our intention to take a careful look at what films cost, and if we can’t get them to a level that we’re comfortable with, we think that we’re better off actually reducing the size of our slate than making films that are bigger and increasingly more risky.”

Although many are pessimistic the movie won’t be revived, the L.A. Times did report the set tear down in Silver City, New Mexico was halted for the time being, and that the “Lone Ranger may get back in the saddle soon.”

Verbinski’s been asked to bring costs down to $210 million, still a big number, but budget battles like these have been worked out before. For example, Michael Bay and Bruckheimer had budget fights with Disney before Pearl Harbor got the greenlight, and Minority Report famously couldn’t get off the ground before Cruise, Spielberg and company reduced their fees as well.

Will the Lone Ranger make it, and help bring westerns back to the movies?
Quite a cliffhanger in today’s difficult economy, that’s for sure.

As Mike Fleming also reports on Deadline, “The Lone Ranger is a giant risk because Westerns don’t traditionally perform well overseas. In a DVD-collapsed world, a $275 million film is back to grossing 3 times its budget to earn out, and that can’t be done without a big overseas reward.”

Johnny Depp Sets Sail on a Romantic Cruise With Vanessa and Gifts Lily-Rose With a Justin Bieber Surprise!

Johnny Depp Sets Sail on a Romantic Cruise With Vanessa Paradis
Johnny Depp happily reunited with his family aboard a yacht docked off the South of France late last week. Vanessa Paradis, wearing a sexy black one-piece, greeted him with a sweet kiss while Johnny handed out gifts. Lily-Rose, a huge Justin Bieber fan, got a new poster to add to her collection of Bieber gear. Their family vacation comes amidst news that production on Johnny’s Lone Ranger remake has been suspended due to budgetary issues. Disney’s still hoping to make the film if it can get the budget under $215 million. Despite the slight setback, Johnny’s still moving forward on two new projects with Disney, including The Night Stalker, about a reporter who investigates crimes with a supernatural or sci-fi spin, and Paul Revere, which tells the story of the historic ride to warn of an impending British invasion. If that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he’s also among the hot dads competing in this year’s shirtless bracket. Johnny’s holding down the number-eight position, but there’s still plenty of time for him to surge ahead.

‘Lone Ranger’ production shut down

Walt Disney Studios has shut down production of The Lone Ranger, a big-budget film starring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the title character, a person close to the production confirmed.

Depp has been the studio’s most bankable star in recent years, anchoring two films that reaped more than a billion dollars in worldwide box office — this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the 2010 film Alice in Wonderland.

Work on the modern retelling of the popular 1949 television Western was halted amid budgetary concerns. Deadline Hollywood, which broke the news, reported that filmmakers were attempting to reduce the $250-million budget but had yet to reach the $200-million figure Disney wants to spend.

The Lone Ranger director Gore Verbinsk i previously clashed with Disney studio executives over cost overruns on the third installment of the Pirates franchise and did not direct the most recent sequel.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp, highest paid in Hollywood

Hollywood actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp are the highest paid male actors in the business, according to the Forbes Top. Depp topped the list last year, but this time he drops to second place. The new No.1 is Leo DiCaprio, who made an impressive jump from the 5th to 1st place this year.
Over the last 12 months Johnny Depp has earned 50 million dollars. This is not bad at all, but considering that last year he earned 75 million dollars, it is only natural that he would fall from the No.1 spot in the Forbes Highest paid actors list.

Leonardo DiCaprio cashed in 77 million dollars from May 2010 to May 2011. His highest paid roles in the past years were the ones in the movies “Shutter Island” and “Inception”, from which he gained a total sum of 1.2 billion dollars.

Both actors had a promising start at the beginning of their careers, but they both turned down the more commercial roles that would have brought them the immediate success. Depp started with the TV show “21 Jump Street” which brought him the fame, but did not settle for action hero roles. Instead, he cared more about choosing characters he could shape. His work has been rewarded with the first movie in the franchise “The Pirates of the Caribbean”, where he became Captain Jack Sparrow.

Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in several roles as a teenager before landing the role in the movie that made him famous: Titanic. Like Depp, instead of going for the superhero roles, or choosing the romantic comedies, he opted for working with great directors, such as Danny Boyle (“The Beach”), Martin Scorsese (“Gangs of New York”) and Steven Spielberg (“Catch Me If you can”).

The Top five of the highest paid actors also includes Adam Sandler, Will Smith and Tom Hanks.

Johnny Depp Producing The Vault Comic Book Adaptation

The Vault

Johnny Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, and Graham King’s GK Films have picked up the film rights to the comic book 3-issue miniseries The Vault and are bringing it to the big screen. Depp, Infinitum Nihil’s president, Christi Dembrowski, King and Tim Headington are producing the film version.

The Vault was created and written by Sam Sarkar with illustrations by Garrie Gastonny.

Announcing the deal, Sarkar said, “So thankful and happy to have the support of Johnny, Christi, Graham, Tim and Denis in bringing the movie of the Vault to life. Lots more surprises to come!”

Here’s the synopsis of the comic miniseries: “The Vault is about a small team of treasure hunters, struggling to excavate a dangerous and legendary treasure pit before a massive storm hits Sable Island, the ‘Graveyard of the North Atlantic.’ Equipped with all the latest technology, the scientists believe they are prepared against all of nature’s fury, but nothing can prepare them for what they are about to unleash.”

Depp’s Infinitum Nihil also produced The Rum Diary, written and directed by Bruce Robinson and opening on October 28th, 2011 as well as Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and Dark Shadows (directed by Tim Burton and starring Depp).

Johnny Depp Eying Paul Revere, Dante And More

Though he certainly could happily retire on his “Pirates” loot, never let it be said that Johnny Depp is not one of the hardest-working men in Hollywood.

This week, news broke of three new potential Depp projects in early discussions. Though he has commitments to Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows” remake and Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” update at the moment, and has said he would consider future installments of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, it sounds like Depp is trying to keep himself busy for the foreseeable future.

Deadline reports that two of the movies are being set up with Disney (Depp’s go-to company these days). The first is a feature film version of “The Night Stalker,” a 1970s TV horror movie and series that tells the story of tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak after he stumbles upon a series of supernatural killers. The second is an untitled Paul Revere film that Depp is working on with “Batman Forever” writers Lee and Janet Batchler. It would follow Revere during the 24-hour time period in which he made his legendary midnight ride to warn the revolutionaries that the British were coming. Depp would potentially star as the lead in both films.

And earlier this week, “Miral” director Julian Schnabel let slip the other bit of Depp news during an interview with The Playlist, when he stated that the “Pirates” star had approached him about an adaptation of “In the Hand of Dante.” Depp had purchased film rights to the book by Nick Tosches several years ago and asked Schnabel to consider it as his next project. It’s not clear if Depp would star in the movie.

“I’m not going to make it for a couple of years,” Schnabel said of the adaptation of the novel, which weaves the story of the 14th century poet and that of a contemporary writer caught up in the potential black market sale of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” manuscript. “We’re gonna work on writing it, developing it. We didn’t sign anything. It’s just something Johnny asked me to read, and I think it’s a great book, so maybe you should read it. It’s pretty beautiful. It’s about everything.”

Disney Developing Two Movies for Actor Johnny Depp

The world famous movie maker Walt Disney Studios is developing two movies for the famous actor Johnny Depp. ‘The Night Stalker’ and a Paul Revere story are Depp’s new projects.

“The Night Stalker” is based on the movie which was first shown in 1972 through ABC-TV. That changed into the series “Kolchak: The Night Stalker. The story of “The Night Stalker” was about a print media reporter in Chicago who investigated mysterious deaths, which were related to the supernatural.

The movie ‘Revere’ is based on the colonial character and his legendary night-time ride. This movie is being brought to the public after an incorrect description by Sarah Palin, the former Alaska Governor, about the Paul Revere story. After the incorrect speech on Revere by Sarah Palin, The movie “Revere” becomes a hot discussion topic once again. The Walter Disney team has selected the right time for making their movies based on ‘’The Night Stalker” and “Revere”. The writers, Lee and Janet will write this movie “Revere” while the writer for the movie based on Night Stalker is still not selected.

The collaboration of Walter Disney and Johnny Depp has always been profitable. This was last seen when their film “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” earned more than $1 billion US. They recently had another successful and profitable movie, “Alice in Wonderland”. Hopefully, Walt Disney Studios expects a lot of success once again from these movies with Johnny Depp.

Penelope Cruz: ‘Johnny Depp looks great in drag’

The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides star said that she believes Depp dresses better than even she does, revealing that he even wears women’s clothing particularly well, according to a recent interview with V magazine.

“Johnny wears everything better than I do,” Cruz said. “He even wore a dress in the movie he did with [Cruz's husband] Javier [Bardem], Before Night Falls. He wore that dress really well.”

In May, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer praised Cruz for bringing a new dynamic to the franchise, stating that she and Depp have great chemistry together.

Depp recently said that he thinks marriage is not necessary, declaring that he has no plans to wed longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis in the near future.

Cruz will next star in Bop Decameron, a Woody Allen film set in Rome. The actress, who worked with Allen on Vicky Cristina Barcelona, said in June that she is thrilled to be collaborating with him once again.
